Connecting Communities

Seeing the rapid population increase in the Tseung Kwan O District, the Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel was commissioned by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the HKSAR to meet the soaring traffic demand to and from the new town. The development would involve the construction of a dual-lane highway, approximately 3.8km long, of which about 2.2km would be a tunnel. Leighton-China State Joint Venture was awarded a part of the contract – NE/2015/01.

Blasting was proposed for the construction of the 2.2km tunnel. The process would pose a relatively high risk of settlement and deformation to the nearby buildings and facilities, especially the MTR tunnels and the old residential housing in Kowloon. An extensive geotechnical monitoring programme was designed to mitigate the risk of structural damage.

How We Helped

In 2016, Sixense was selected to conduct the geotechnical monitoring works during the construction period of the Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel. Automatic instruments were installed at two existing tunnels – MTR Kwun Tong Line and Tseung Kwan O Line, to monitor the impact of the construction works. Our Cyclops (ADMS) system, a vibration monitoring system and CCTVs were installed along a total of 400m of tunnels.

Our Beyond Monitoring software allows real time viewing of the data on PC, mobile phones and tablets, as well as broadcasting the blasting event reports and monitoring summaries to all stakeholders in a heartbeat.
