A residential development project

The Government has been planning to further develop Tung Chung New Town (TCNT) into a comprehensively planned new town with a larger population capacity and adequate local and regional community facilities.
The proposed Tung Chung New Town Extension (TCNTE) will cover areas on the eastern and western flanks of the existing TCNT. It will provide about 49,400 residential flats for a population of about 144,400.
The scope of the proposed construction works include site formation works for about 10 ha of land for the development of TCNTE at Tung Chung West.

A lightweight imaging solution for a zone of difficult access

Tung Chung West is still an undeveloped, hilly area covered with thick vegetation, where drilling rigs are particularly difficult to deploy and time consuming. Land resistivity surveys were proposed to overcome these site constraints.
Electrical imaging on the flank of the hills was carried out with the objective of detecting contrasts in the electrical characteristics of the subsurface, such as geological layering, faults, ground water conditions etc.
This solution provided an understanding of the bedrock topography and fractured zones, and helped locate mafic basalt enclaves. It also helped characterize shallow colluvium and debris flow layers.
The combination of a limited amount of drillholes and extensive Electrical Resistivity Imaging led to the optimization of costs and the time needed for the overall program of investigation, while proposing an extensive coverage of the future development area.
