Context
PT Vale Indonesia Tbk operates two dry ore storage facilities at its Sorowako Process Plant – Dry Ore Storage 1 (DOS #1) and Dry Ore Storage 2 (DOS #2). Both facilities were constructed during the initial establishment of the plant in the 1970s. They feature glue-laminated timber arch structures supported by timber purlins and are clad with profiled metal sheeting. Over the years, Dry Ore Storage 2 has experienced progressive structural deterioration, primarily due to prolonged exposure to harsh environmental conditions and the cumulative impact of continuous operational activities. This degradation has raised concerns regarding the facility’s structural integrity, safety, and long-term serviceability, prompting the need for a thorough assessment and timely intervention to prevent further damage and ensure continued operational reliability.
Our services
Before initiating the design phase for the repair and protection works, a comprehensive diagnostic assessment was conducted to establish an up-to-date and detailed understanding of the condition of the glulam timber structures. This diagnostic process included the identification and documentation of various types of structural defects, along with an evaluation of their severity and extent. High-resolution images and precise mapping were carried out using Sixense DigitalSite platform to ensure accurate visualization and tracking for the process. The assessment also involved determining the wood species and its corresponding strength class, as well as measuring wood hardness and moisture content to evaluate material integrity. Additionally, the condition and quality of structural connections, secondary elements, and the overall framework were thoroughly reviewed to inform the most effective repair strategy.
